Gall Bladder Surgical Errors

Malpractice in Gall Bladder Operations

Errors in gall bladder surgery can cause devastating outcomes. The patient may require major surgery to repair damaged ducts. An error can even cause death.

If a surgeon bungled your gall bladder removal surgery, I can determine if you have a viable lawsuit for medical malpractice. In close to three decades of practice, I have recovered damages in many surgical error cases, including adverse outcomes of gall bladder surgery.

Negligence in Gall Bladder/Gallstone Removal

Cholecystectomy is a procedure to remove the gall bladder. A laparoscopic procedure is a less invasive method of performing cholecystectomy. It may also be accomplished through open surgery, or laparotomy. Although it is a fairly common surgery, special care is required because of the delicate ducts involved and proximity to other organs.

One of the most destructive complications may occur when the surgeon cuts the common bile duct instead of the cystic duct. The two vessels are very close to each other, but severing the common bile duct can seriously impair liver function. Such patients are at risk of losing their liver as well.

If the error is discovered, complex repair surgery may be performed through a complex follow-up operation (roux-en-y hepaticojejunostomy) to reconnect the patient's internal "plumbing." This surgery is naturally very stressful for a patient who has just been victimized by a negligent surgeon, and the time for recovery may drag on for much longer.

Other complications of gall bladder surgery that could result in a malpractice claim include:

  • Major infection or internal bleeding
  • Damaging other internal organs or structures during surgery
