Malpractice Suits Involving Botched Abortion
Abortion is a complex medical procedure involving delicate tissues and internal organs. There is significant risk of injury during surgery and for deadly post-operative complications.
Doctors who perform abortions have a duty to proceed cautiously to avoid injury and to monitor patients closely afterward.

Complications from Abortion Malpractice
The most common injury from a botched abortion is a perforated uterus. The uterine wall is very thin and easily torn during the procedure. If the physician notices the damage, the patient should be transferred to a hospital for treatment.
— When doctors fail to diagnose a compromised uterus or ignore it, the patient is sent home in a dangerous state. The woman may pass out or hemorrhage (bleed profusely), resulting in death, brain damage, paralysis or organ failure.
— If the tear is too large to be repaired, a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) may be performed. Damages in an abortion malpractice lawsuit might include the emotional devastation for the inability to bear children.
Other injuries and serious complications from a botched abortion may include:
- Lacerated ureter or perforated bladder
- Infection from remnant fetal tissues and embryonic fluid
- Anesthesia injury
- Embolism (blood clot) and stroke
- Sterility or high-risk future pregnancies
